And again, just continuing our coverage here. It is 1 00 in the east. We continue our coverage of the death of former president George Herbert walker bush, americas 41st commander in chief. He has died at the age of 94. That word came to us now just over an hour ago, the word being passed from a statement from his son, george w. Bush. We are joined by Hallie Jackson. Let me start with you because we have heard from the current im sorry. That is my mistake. We will be hearing from her in a minute. We are going to pause here just for a few seconds because were going to be joined by our Network Affili ....
Play this notion that hagel is being forced out, pushed out. What are you hearing . Im hearing from defense officials that this was mutual. Thats a consistent line. I know that others are hearing he was pushed out and, to be frank, there had been talk of dissatisfaction from the white house with secretary hagel for some number of weeks. Now, to be fair, that criticism does not only go in one direction. Fact is, in the halls of the pentagon you will hear frustration with the white house, with lack of strategic planning, with micromanagement and thats, frankly, a criticism that ive heard, wolf, outside of the pentagon as well in other departments. The state department, other wings of this government. Its a consistent frustration with this administration which we hear quietly and privately internally. Keep in mind as well that secretary hagel when he came into this job he had a different remit. A little less than two years ago the focus was on withdrawing troops from iraq, withdrawing tro ....
Involved in this. it wasn t just a u.s. operation. it was, again, just five allies saying, enough is enough. you know, rumsfeld had a saying, if you can t solve a problem, make it bigger. could that work in this case? we have a problem that has been so difficult to solve between israel and hamas. could making this conflict bigger be helpful, or is this something that is of great concern and alarm, do you think? there has been concern about the wider war, but it s also true that the u.s. and israel both believe that iran does not want to see a direct confrontation with either the united states or israel. so if you expand it to the point that you re near that confrontation, there is some natural pressure to begin to de-escalate it. none of the parties want it. in the short run, i think that these individual proxies will continue to act. they ll want to show, we re as tough as those houthis. you could get a spike up in ....
Think, as the more they watch, the more they just kind of scratch their heads and say, this guy should not be our president. that s why team biden is not they re just not as concerned as everybody on the outside. how trump views the world, when he sees a problem, he makes it bigger. right. bringing in rumsfeld. he makes it bigger in ways that haven t rebounded against him, mostly in his role to the republican nomination which i still think is mostly likely. but it complicates his life once that is over and he is in a general election. that s what the biden people are waiting for. as you say, democrats are not going to vote for trump. but there is a big swath of america in the middle that aren t that happy with joe biden but haven t spent a lot of time looking at donald trump. exactly. in this election, they will be. he s been off the airwaves for most of the last year. i mean, now he s coming back and people are remembering what it was like. i mean, i think there wa ....
