SOUTH SUDAN: 24 Suspects Arrested in Connection with Bishop-Elect’s Shooting in Rumbek

RUMBEK, APRIL 27, 2021 (CISA)-24 suspects have been arrested in connection with the April 26 shooting of Rt. Rev. Christian Carlassare, the Bishop-elect of Catholic Diocese of Rumbek.
According to the Elijah Mabor, the Police Spokesperson in Rumbek Lakes States, those arrested include four priests and seven security guards at the bishop’s residence when the incidence occurred on Monday April 26 at about 2:00 am.
“All security organs are investigating the detained suspect in connection with incident which occurred at 2 am,” Mabor said.
“It’s a well secure place only that there are no soldiers deployed in that area; there are three concrete fences. The criminals sneaked until they reached the third fence where bishop lives,” Police spokes man said.

Calm returns after clashes in Cueibet County
Authorities in Cueibet County of Lakes State said calm has returned to Tiatiap Payam after inter-communal fighting between Panyar and Waat sections left eight people dead and 20 wounded on Wednesday last week.
The renewed clashes broke out when a young man from the Waat section identified one of his cows which had been raided by the Panyar section.
In an interview with the Radio Tamazuj, the chief inspector of police in Cueibet County, Col. Machar Muorwel who was at the scene of clashes on Wednesday, said that the situation in Tiatiap Payam of Cueibet County was calm.
Sectional clashes leave 13 dead in Yirol West County
At least 13 people were killed and one wounded in inter-communal clashes in Annuol Payam of Yirol West County.
The revenge attack occurred on Thursday morning last week in Amulic Cattle camp when an injured victim of earlier clashes as a result of a girl’s elopement died on Wednesday in Yirol Hospital.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, the acting minister of information and communication in Lakes State, William Kocji Kerjok, said, “The situation in Annuol Payam of Yirol West County is not yet good because they are still fighting and of course there is a report of 13 people killed and the forces are trying to control the situation.”
Rumbek Bishop-elect shot and injured, 24 suspects arrested
Authorities in Lakes State have confirmed that the Bishop-elect of Rumbek Catholic Diocese has been shot and wounded in both legs by unknown gunmen who attacked his residence at midnight yesterday.
About 24 suspects have so far been arrested by the police in the Lakes State capital, Rumbek.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj this morning, the acting minister of Information and Communication, William Kocji Kerjok condemned the assassination attempt on Father Christian Carlassare, the Bishop-elect.
He said Fr. Carlassare was wounded in both legs by the gunmen who entered his room last night and is now receiving medication in Rumbek State hospital.
