PH's Virology Institute to rise in Tarlac soon – DOST – Manila Bulletin

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said it is currently coordinating with other government agencies for the construction of the Virology Institute of the Philippines (VIP).
The Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) has “allotted five hectares of land in the New Clark Economic Zone in Capas, Tarlac, as the VIP site,” said DOST Undersecretary Rowena Guevarra on Tuesday, May 25.
Currently, both the DOST and BCDA are “finalizing the term sheet before signing the lease contract.” The DOST is also in talks with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for the building’s design, said Guevarra. ....

WHO solidarity vaccine trials in PH may start in June – DOST official – Manila Bulletin

DOST Undersecretary Rowena Guevarra said the solidarity trials will be funded by the Philippine government through the DOST and the Department of Health (DOH).
“Ini-expect natin na mag-umpisa yung sa WHO solidarity vaccine trials mga by June (We expect the WHO solidarity vaccine trials to begin by June),” Guevarra said in a public briefing.
For the clinical trials, Guevarra explained that volunteers from areas with high rates of infections will be recruited. They will then undergo protocols approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the country’s Ethics Review Board.
“Ang gusto nilang malaman ay yung safety at saka yung efficacy nitong ating mga iba’t-ibang brands ng bakuna (What they want to know is the safety and also the efficacy of various brands of vaccines),” she said. ....

No 'solid conclusion' on Ivermectin use for COVID-19 treatment – DOST official – Manila Bulletin

DOST Undersecretary Rowena Guevarra said there are currently more than 50 clinical trials worldwide for the use of Ivermectin as possible treatment against COVID-19.
“Ang problema natin, walang solid na conclusion, merong nagsasabi na okay siya, merong nagsasabi na hindi siya okay (Our problem is, there is no solid conclusion. Some say it is okay, some say it is not),” Guevarra said in a public briefing Tuesday, May 25.
In the Philippines, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has allowed the limited use of Ivermectin under the conditions of a compassionate special permit.

Three other vaccine developers are interested in conducting a clinical trial in the Philippines for their respective coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccines, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said on Tuesday, May 25.
DOST Undersecretary Rowena Guevarra said that the three vaccine developers have already submitted their COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial applications. These are West China Hospital and Sichuan University, Shenzhen Kangtai Biological Products Co., and Eubiologics Co. Ltd.
“Evaluation of the first two new applications are ongoing, while Eubiologics Co. Ltd are still completing some requirements,” said Guevarra in an online forum hosted by the Department of Health (DOH). ....
