KEYNOTES: Rotarians adapt to online setting Rosemary Rimkus The confines of COVID-19 have forced the Hudson Rotary Club to adapt its meetings and its aims. Organized in 1923, almost one hundred years later the Hudson service organization has swapped its weekly meetings at the Hudson Portuguese Club for bi-weekly “Zoom” meetings, and in recent years dropped its mandatory weekly attendance rules. Hudson Town Moderator Richard Harrity, current club president, said when Covid restrictions were announced in March 2020, the club attempted outdoor meetings for a few months, “but in the Fall the weather forced us to make other plans.” At recent “Zoom” meetings, the club has hosted guest speakers Tom Gregory, who will soon succeed Tom Moses as town administrator; Police Chief Rick DiPersio and Mark O’Connell, Avidia bank president. ....
KEYNOTES: Thompson family reunites after second vaccination dose Rosemary Rimkus Like families everywhere, the four generations of the family of Hudson residents Raymond and Muriel Thompson look forward to post-COVID, when they can again gather for special occasions. The couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Oct. 3, 2019, just before the pandemic struck, but they have been “masking and distancing” for over a year. With Covid restrictions since March 2020, it has been impossible to visit, hug or see their little ones, or other family members. Recently both received their second vaccination, and were finally able to meet their newest grandchild, Halle, 3 1/2 months old, for the first time. Parents of seven daughters and one son, they now embrace 18 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Their children are Muriel, Frances, Eileen, Nora, twins Clare and Mary Anne, Raymond and Jeanne. ....
KEYNOTES: Library offers limited indoor browsing Rosemary Rimkus After more than a year of COVID-caused imperatives, the staff of the Hudson Public Library is welcoming limited patrons back to its stacks. Head librarian Aileen Sanchez-Himes said capacity of 12 patrons may visit for 20 minutes for general library business, or 30-minute access to the library computers, after they have contacted the library or registered online. Glass partitions are being installed at the service and reference desks. With the recent closing of the children’s room due to steam pipe breakage, many of the children’s books and services have moved upstairs to the main library, according to children’s librarian Jillian Bennett. “Every one of the children’s room team has done a really incredible job bringing library services to families during this time,” said Bennett, “and I look forward to having patrons back here as soon as possible.” ....
KEYNOTES: COVID-19 food relief program to scale down Rosemary Rimkus Organized in March 2020, when COVID-19-related restrictions first appeared, the Food Relief program at First United Methodist Church continues to serve Hudson families. Hudson resident Stacey Hartford, who has spearheaded the yearlong program, said Food Relief began with two drive-up and delivery events weekly. As of April 16, food delivery will be curtailed to the third Friday of each month. Hartford said the program was introduced for families who, under pandemic rules, could no longer go the store, and families whose income was reduced. She added that since many have received the COVID vaccine, and meals are available for children in school, the once-a-month delivery has been put in place. ....
KEYNOTES: Ceremony in 2018 dedicated bridge to Pfc. Thibault Rosemary Rimkus Washington Street bridge, the main thoroughfare over the Assabet River in downtown Hudson, was dedicated to the memory of Vietnam War hero, Army Pfc. Kenneth M. Thibault on June 16, 2018, following the reconstruction of the bridge. Thibault, a 1966 graduate of Hudson High School, was killed by hostile fire in Binh Dinh, Vietnam, on April 2, 1967, two days after his 20th birthday. Army Lt. Col. David S. Diaz was keynote speaker at the dedication, in addition to state Sen. Jamie Eldridge, state Rep. Kate Hogan, Hudson Selectman chairman John Parent and Kenny’s Hudson High School classmate Jay Murphy, also a Vietnam War veteran. Jason Caron led the Hudson High School band in the national anthem and “God Bless America.” The Color guard was provided by Hudson Police Department and members of Hudson Amvets Post 208, which has been named in Thibault’s memory. ....
