KEYNOTES: Family remembers Capt. Seth Michaud Rosemary Rimkus After many months of reconstruction of the ancient Houghton Street Bridge, it was dedicated to the memory of U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Seth Michaud, with ceremonies on the site on May 25, 2015. Michaud, a helicopter pilot, was killed in Africa during Operation Enduring Freedom on June 22, 2003. (In 2018, the Washington Street bridge was dedicated to the memory of Pfc. Kenneth M. Thibault, killed in Vietnam in 1969, which will be the subject of another story.) Michaud’s widow, Karen Michaud-Goldsmith, and young son, Ian, were among those at the dedication. Michaud, son of former Chestnut Street residents Fran and Karen Michaud, was an honor student in the Hudson High School class of 1994, where he played soccer for four years, an Eagle Scout and a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1998. He was 27 years old when he was killed in a helicopter crash in 2003. His parents moved from Hudson eight years ....

KEYNOTES: Residents recall outdoor rinks of yesterday Rosemary Rimkus The frigid temperatures have frozen sections of the Assabet River and area ponds, allowing locals to continue the time-honored tradition in Hudson of outdoor skating. Hudson resident Dave O’Neil, 94, member of the 1943-44 Hudson High School hockey team, recalls that Tripp’s Pond was always frozen in those days by the end of December, and provided practice space for the team. “We practiced daily on a rink we cleared at Tripp’s, and then played all our games at the old Boston Arena,” he recalled, “traveling by bus.” Coached by Tom Fielding, the team made the state semi-finals in 1944, and was beaten by Needham High 3-2, O’Neil remembers. He recalls there were several outdoor rinks in the 1940s and 50s: at the VFW (now Amvets) parking lot on South Street; in the parking area between the State Armory and W.T. Grant store (now Robinson’s). Old newspaper records show that in 1929, the Firest ....
Rosemary Rimkus This is the story of the three statues that appeared at St. Michael’s Parish Cemetery about 17 years ago. When the expansion of St. Michael Parish cemetery was imminent in 2004, John R. Nelson, then a Bolton resident, came to the rescue. Upon the untimely death of his wife, Judith, in 2004, her burial was in the Hudson cemetery, and Nelson and his sons helped to plan and realize the cemetery expansion. Nelson, 77, who died at his home in Leland, North Carolina, on Feb. 9, 2021, was buried next to his wife on Feb. 19, 2021, following his funeral Mass at St. Michael Church. Nelson’s gift not only included the design and expansion of the section bounded by Cox Street and Old Stow Road, but the installation of life-size statues of St. Michael, St. Jude and St. Anthony. The Rev. Walter Carreiro of St. Anthony Parish, Cambridge, then pastor of St. Michael s Church, said he was delighted at the time to receive Nelson’s support, the architectural aid of his son, ....
Rosemary Rimkus Hudson native Elizabeth “Liz” Tewksbary of Bolton has been writing daily letters to her granddaughter, Cohen, since she was born nearly three years ago. At the suggestion of friends and family, and the availability of self-publishing, “Liz” just published her third book for toddlers, “Smile With Me.” “Covid has isolated us, and the letters to Cohen were a good way to keep in contact,” said “Liz.” The letters were read to Cohen, who lives in Texas, by her mother, who was among those suggesting they would make good children’s books. The illustrations by Kim Soderberg are a perfect setting for the toddler books. “Liz” has previously published “My Mask and Me,” and “Just Like Me,” all suitable for ages 2-6 year olds. She has donated some books to the “CHAPS” center on Broad Street and other pre-schools, and they are also for sale at Bolton Orchards and “The Quilted Crow” in Bolton. The author is the wife of Dave Tewksbary, ....
