'I'll worry about tomorrow when I get there;' One couple is keeping a rural Sask. town from being wiped off the map


Now, they’re the last two people in town.
Highway 13 isn’t nicknamed Ghost Town Trail for nothing.
“The rural population is decreasing and moving to urban centres,” says Keith, 72. “What’s happening now is (that) a place like Scotsguard or Admiral or Instow is basically, virtually, wiped off the map.”

Throughout the mid-20th century, once-robust towns along Highway 13 dwindled into nothingness. All that remains of too many settlements are old railway crossings and occasional derelict buildings. Others have entirely faded from physical existence, marked only by dots and names on old maps. ....

SCOTSGUARD The population of Scotsguard peaked at around 350 in the 1920s. Then, the town was home to a hotel, stores, restaurants and a half-dozen grain elevators that thrived along the recently built railway and southern Saskatchewan’s busy Highway 13.
Things changed. By the time Keith and Beverly Hagen moved back to the town in 1987, they brought the population of Scotsguard all the way into the double digits, to 10.
