THE Conservatives have made apparent gains from the Lib Dems following a recount in the race to become Durham s new Police Crime and Victims’ Commissioner Returning officer John Hewitt said following a review of the first preference figures that were announced for Spennymoor and Stanley, there were some discrepancies brought to his attention. These discrepancies would not have altered the decision to move to second preference vote, however following consultation with all candiates and agents and to ensure full confidence in the outcome, I have asked for a recount of first preference votes in Spennymoor and Stanley. This does not affect the count in Darlington. ....

Ms Allen received 80,520 votes in total. The count, which started at 9am, saw Lib Dem candidate Anne-Marie Curry eliminated in the first round after receiving 13,644 votes. However, Shortly after 1.30pm on Saturday it was said there would be a recount due to discrepancies. ....
Joy Allen (Labour) BANGING the drum for fairer funding for the police service in Darlington and County Durham must be among the top priorities for the next commissioner, Labour’s candidate Joy Allen has claimed. Ms Allen, whose career has seen her working for public sector bodies such as councils, the police and fire services and leading partnerships to tackle anti-social behaviour, believes the commissioner’s key challenge will be to get more police back on the streets and get justice for victims. She said: “The victims’ confidence at the moment is at an all-time low. There’s more cases than ever failing due to victims’ non-cooperation and it it now counts for a quarter of all cases. As commissioner I will stand up and defend victims’ rights.” ....
