Litter campaign Tory MP who dropped cigarette butt accused of hypocrisy

A Tory MP who urged people not be be “litter tossers” has been accused of hypocrisy after he was fined for dropping a cigarette butt.
Richard Holden, MP for Durham North West, was one of two people caught by neighbourhood wardens outside the election count at the Louisa Centre in Stanley, County Durham, on Saturday, and was given a £100 fixed penalty notice.
Last summer, Mr Holden launched a lockdown litter-picking campaign in his constituency, saying it was “unacceptable” that beautiful areas were strewn with rubbish, and he said he backed enforcement action.
Great to have such great local support out in #Blackhill today – managed to get quite a lot of litter picked up this morning! ....

A Conservative MP who urged people not to be litter tossers has been fined for dropping a cigarette.
Durham North West MP Richard Holden was caught outside an election count at the Louisa Centre in Stanley, County Durham, on Saturday and fined £100.
Last summer Mr Holden launched a lockdown litter-picking campaign and said it was unacceptable to leave beautiful areas strewn with rubbish.
His office has been approached for comment.

Tory MP Richard Holden hit with £100 penalty notice for littering after dropping cigarette butt

A Conservative MP has been issued with a £100 fine for dropping a cigarette outside an election count.
Richard Holden, who represents North-West Durham, was hit with the charge outside the Louisa Centre in Stanley, County Durham on May 8.
He had been there supporting Conservative Party candidates in the Durham County Council elections but had left the building to smoke a cigarette.
It is understood he was spotted by a council warden dropping the butt onto the ground, bringing about a charge for the offence of littering.
Mr Holden, who was elected in 2019, and has posted pictures of himself on social media doing litter picking in his constituency, was given ten days to pay before the charge increases to £150. ....

RECOUNT to take place in Durham police commissioner election

THE Conservatives have made apparent gains from the Lib Dems following a recount in the race to become Durham s new Police Crime and Victims’ Commissioner
Returning officer John Hewitt said following a review of the first preference figures that were announced for Spennymoor and Stanley, there were some discrepancies brought to his attention.
These discrepancies would not have altered the decision to move to second preference vote, however following consultation with all candiates and agents and to ensure full confidence in the outcome, I have asked for a recount of first preference votes in Spennymoor and Stanley.
This does not affect the count in Darlington. ....
