On a recent afternoon, a half-dozen people came and went from the boarded-up red house on North Mississippi Avenue that just two months ago served as the catalyst for an explosive standoff between activists and city leaders.
People stayed warm under a tarp jutting from the back of the dilapidated two-story house. A handwritten sign listed chores including “organize tent” and “mulch pathways.” A woman showed up with a case of Capri Sun soft drinks. Someone delivered firewood. ....

Ten years after the end of the financial crisis that forced nearly 4 million Americans into foreclosure, the Kinney family and the so-called Red House on Mississippi have become a flashpoint over the inequities facing Black families and people of color in inner North and Northeast Portland.
On one side, thousands of people have contributed cash in an effort to repurchase the house, which the family lost in a 2018 foreclosure sale. Hundreds showed up on Dec. 8 to prevent their forcible eviction and have maintained an occupation and ongoing protest at the home for months. ....

The owners of a home in Portland that has become another flashpoint between police and Antifa demonstrators protesting racism and gentrification stopped making loan payments while claiming to be citizens of a country they invented.
The small red house on North Mississippi Avenue has been in the Kinney family for 65 years and has been the site of protests since September, when authorities tried to evict them after the mortgage lapsed. An activist group that organized an eviction blockade that prevented access to the home has since reached an agreement with Mayor Ted Wheeler, it said over the weekend. ....
