Following a raid on his apartment by Russian authorities in April, Anin discovered he had been under surveillance for years.

More than 200 reporters and news outlets from around the world have signed a statement calling on the Russian government to restore freedom of the press in the country, less than a month after reporter Roman Anin’s apartment was raided and his equipment seized by authorities.
Anin, who is an ICIJ member and editor-in-chief of independent investigative outlet IStories, was taken in for questioning on April 9, after a seven-hour search of his apartment by the Federal Security Service (FSB). ....

April was a terrible month for freedom of expression in Russia.
In early April, the authorities struck at Roman Anin, editor-in-chief of
iStories (Important Stories), a new outlet specializing in investigative journalism.
The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) raided Anin’s home and
iStories’ office in connection with a 2016 criminal invasion of privacy case that had been dormant for more than four years  concerning his reporting on a luxury yacht, owned by an off-shore company, on which the then-wife of Igor Sechin, head of the state oil corporation, Rosneft, took extended Mediterranean vacations. iStories did not even exist at the time. Following Sechin’s successful defamation lawsuit, Novaya Gazeta, the newspaper that published the article had to publish a retraction. ....

Nearly 300 international academics and a popular Russian YouTuber have expressed solidarity with Russian journalists recently subjected to police raids amid widening pressure on independent media.
The letters of support and calls for donations came after four editors of independent student news site DOXA were charged with criminal incitement of youth and investigative journalist Roman Anin was questioned as a witness in an invasion of privacy investigation.

Some 271 academics signed an open letter calling the charges against DOXA editors Armen Aramyan, Vladimir Metelkin, Alla Gutnikova and Natasha Tyshekvich “preposterous.” The journalists face up to three years in prison for a video saying stu ....
