WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) Samoa will bring its flair and giant-killing ability to the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France after beating Tonga 37-15 on Saturday and sweeping their their two-match qualifying series.
The Samoans will take their place at the World Cup in Pool D with Argentina, Japan, England and a qualifier from the Americas.
Tonga still has a lifeline in its bid to qualify for France 2023. It will play the Cook Islands in New Zealand next weekend with the chance of joining South Africa, Ireland and Scotland in Pool B at the world tournament.
Samoa has been a crowd favorite at World Cup tournaments since its first appearance in 1991 when it caused one of the first major upsets at rugby’s showpiece, beating Wales 16-13 in Cardiff. It beat Wales again, 38-31 in Cardiff in 1999, reaching the quarterfinals in 1991, 1995 and 1999. ....

Samoa seal Rugby World Cup qualification over Tonga


The first quarter of the match was dominated by long stoppages and basic errors in the slippery conditions, with Tonga losing lock Harrison Mataele and hooker Siua Maile to injury inside the first ten minutes.
It was the Ikale Tahi who opened the scoring with a fourth minute penalty, after Samoa had spilled the kickoff and then conceded a penalty from a scrum. Samoa levelled the scores five minutes later before Henry Taefu s second penalty gave the Manu a 6-3 buffer on 13 minutes.

After a cagey start to the match, in which both teams struggled to build phases and hold onto the ball it was Samoa who seized the initiative 15 minutes before the interval . A long raking kick pinned Tonga back inside their own 22. Samuel Slade stole the resulting lineout and the ball spun wide, with first five Rodney Iona s looping cut-out pass finding dynamic winger Ed Fidow, who raced away down the right-hand touchline to score ....

Manu Samoa are prepared to take on a determined ‘Ikale Tahi side in Auckland today, in the first of two tests to decide who will qualify for the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
Samoa go into the match having suffered back-to-back defeats to the New Zealand Māori, but put in an improved 38-21 effort in last weekend’s encounter, compared to their 35-10 defeat the week prior.
Meanwhile Tonga will be looking to put last week’s 102-0 defeat to the All Blacks behind them.
Manu Samoa coach Vaovasamanaia Seilala Mapusua said there’s a few bumps and bruises from their last two outings, but it’s nothing the blue jersey can’t fix. ....

Māori All Blacks ease past Samoa again.
Job done. Clayton McMillan’s Māori All Blacks marked their 125th international appearance, and Otere Black’s farewell, by completing a clinical sweep of a gallant but outmatched Manu Samoa side at Mount Smart Stadium on Saturday.
Opening an historic Pasifika-themed double-header at the home of the Warriors, the Māori worked their usual mixture of forward grunt and backline enterprise to go two from two against the Samoans with a 38-21, six tries to three, victory.
Backing up from last weekend’s convincing success over the same opponents in Wellington, this was another top-drawer effort from a side that continues to grace the international stage with aplomb. This was their 12th win from as many matches against the Samoans. ....
