Retired colonel serves as Hula Bowl's military ambassador | Win Or Lose

Redstone Arsenal was well-represented at this year’s nationally televised Hula Bowl despite no fans in the stands at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Three Redstone employees had connections to the postseason college football all-star game played Jan. 31 and telecast on CBS. The game was played without fans in attendance because of the pandemic.
Retired Col. Jeff Finley, who works at the Army Materiel Command, wore his Army uniform as the game’s military ambassador. Rod Matthews, aviation contracts director for Army Contracting Command-Redstone, saw his son asked to be a receivers coach for the game’s NFL prospects. His son is 49ers receiver Jordan Matthews. ....

SEX ASSAULT CLAIMS
All credit to the Prime Minister for coming out strongly condemning the alleged rape of a young Liberal Party staffer in 2019 (“‘We need to do better’: PM apologises for treatment of Higgins”, The Age, 16/2). Although long overdue it appeared his apology, and subsequent action, was heartfelt and sincere.
Two things are concerning, however. It beggars belief that the PM didn’t know of the allegation back in 2019. I would have thought something as heinous as an alleged rape would have been flagged with the PM’s office if not the PM himself at that time. ....

GAY CONVERSION LAWS
There’s an old joke among therapists. How many therapists does it take to change a light bulb? None, because the lightbulb has to want to change itself. The truth contained within this joke is patients are often motivated by wanting to change aspects of themselves or understand themselves better.
When it comes to sexual orientation or gender identity, which are two very different areas and should not be conflated, many people of course have no need for a therapist because indeed nothing requires fixing, but it is not true for all. There are patients who seek counselling because they may be conflicted or confused or uneasy about certain feelings or thoughts of themselves. ....

No-blame inquiry
There is much to support in Jeff Kennett’s views on a national inquiry into Australia’s performance during the coronavirus pandemic (‘‘Virus royal commission has much to recommend it’’, 30/12 ). Kennett’s view that an ‘‘educative’’ inquiry is needed because there could be another crisis in the future and lessons needed to be learnt may well be prescient.
If a royal commission or other inquiry is eventually held, its chair and counsels assisting need to be independent and of the highest quality. The inquiry should have a no-blame culture and as Kennett says, an educative focus, learning from both the things which were done poorly as well as the things which were done well and the inquiry’s outcomes should produce templates for nationally co-ordinated disaster plans, border closures, testing regime ....
