Reporter this all started as a three alarm fire quickly spreading, turning into a 5 alarm fire and the building is still smoldering. Crews are still on the scene, posing hosing down the building trying to get out the remaining hotspots. The massive fire ripped through the apartment construction site near lake merritt. The flames, leaping out, inching closer to neighboring buildings. We woke up, we hear screaming. Get out, get out, fire. Reporter this neighbor says the fire almost trapped his family stuck on the third floor of the neighboring building. I opened the door, looked and there was a flame in my face. Literally in my face.
