Of you who know him, Gar Alperovitz can, our speaker for this evening. Hes built these vibrant centers of good food and good drink anded good discussion, and we get to enjoy it here tonight. Gar alperovitz, if you dont know him, is a national treasure. He is a pathbreaking historian, a political economist, a strategist, an author and an organizer. Hes worked in both houses of congress. Hes created centers of political economy. Hes written pathbreaking books in the history and in economics. He is an extraordinary resource. Most recently, mideast the can founder of the most recently, hes the can founder of the democracy collaborative and the cochair of the next system project which is seeking real world paths to creating a world that could be more just, more democratic and sustainable. First of all, attorney general eric holder says correctly that too many people are in prison for too long for offenses which dont deserve any prison time and he calls for changing our sentencing laws so prison is only reserved for the most serious offenses. A new york judge has said that new york citys stop, question and frisk policy or practices of the new York City Police is wrong. It amounts to racial profiling and she says that theyve got to stop it. Stop and question people based on reasonable suspicion. In boston, a jury has found Whitey Bulger, surprise, surprise, guilty of racketeering and 11 counts of murder. All of that and more coming up right here on current tv. If you believe in
In unity, thats where our strength is, as a united movement. If we all just, like, want to challenge the system just individually and just, like, individually negotiate our employment contract, good luck with that. It is the only way possible, on a united and global scale. And on the outcome of this global movement, is workers, like, taking control of things. And this is about workers demanding more rights and inevitably it has to lead to workers, you know, getting to a point where they can not just that, you know, we have more rights but they cant be taken back because there is nobody elses to take back. Theyre our rights. And [ applause ] i mean, thats why, i mean, the fight for 15 is important, but it also has to be for a union, because if we get 15, i mean, tomorrow they can take that away without a union. Right.
