Postponement granted in start of trial for Rushdie assailant.
Author Salman Rushdie's plans to publish a book about a 2022 attempt on his life has delayed the start of the trial of his alleged.
The Chautauqua County Legislature met over Zoom Wednesday evening.
Chautauqua County officials have approved a property sale in the city of Dunkirk which will permit an existing city business to expand.
In 2018, Roberts Road Freezer, LLC purchased about 10 acres of land from the county to build a 100,000 foot freezer. The company, which was at time was doing business with Fieldbrook Foods, left an option open for them to purchase another three parcels of land for $1 in the next six years.
During the legislature meeting Wednesday, county lawmakers agreed to modify the resolution to allow the company to purchase an additional 7.5 acres.

There are 16 prefiled resolutions for Wednesday’s Chautauqua County Legislature meeting. None of them deal with who will be the Democratic election commissioner for 2021.
Norm Green is both the Democratic election commissioner and the chairman of the county Democratic Committee. In 2020, Green announced he was going to retire at the end of the year. He personally backed Luz Torres, his current deputy election commissioner, to take his place. County Democrats elected Torres in October, but that same month, the county Legislature refused to vote on Torres’ appointment.
Because a vote was never held, her appointment nomination expired. To replace her, the county Democratic Executive Committee backed Green to return as the election commissioner. A certification of the appointment was sent to the full legislature and was received on Jan. 4.

Chautauqua County managers who are on the high pay end will be getting a raise next year.
On Wednesday, the county legislature voted 11 to 8 to give high end managers a 1.5% raise.
Before Wednesday’s meeting, the local law was reviewed by both the Administrative Services and Audit and Control committees. Administrative Services did not pass the legislation, while Audit and Control did. Neither committee vote mattered because the full legislature’s approval was required for it to be enacted.
The local law is believed to impact 12 high end managers and will cost $16,990, assuming all 12 are granted the full 1.5% pay increase.
