A Sailor assigned to Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Unit (NMRTU) Groton onboard Naval Submarine Base (SUBASE) New London was honored as Service Person of the Month (SPOM) during a virtual ceremony, May 10. Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Robert Whitney of Paso Robles was recognized by the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut (the Chamber) and the Mystic Rotary Club for his efforts in supporting COVID-19 vaccine distribution in response to the pandemic. “In the midst of a global pandemic that has grounded many aspects of American life to a halt, Petty Officer Whitney has been the constant,” said Dara Wicken, a representative of the Chamber. “He led a cohesive team of 35 Sailors in the delivery of 10,467 vaccines to 5,980 active duty service members, civilian employees, and beneficiaries in the local area. Chuck Nazzaro, D-Jamestown and legislature Democratic minority leader, said in a letter sent to The Post-Journal and other media outlets late Tuesday night that the Democratic Legislative Caucus had planned to stay silent on the issue of Green’s successor until after a decision had been made in a lawsuit filed by Green and Luz Torres, Green’s choice to be the next Democratic election commissioner, against the legislature last week. Apr 1, 2021 What were Chautauqua County legislators thinking last week when they proposed appointing Loren Kent as the next Democratic election commissioner? We aren’t quibbling with Kent’s qualifications, nor are we opposing the appointment of the Luz Torres, the Dunkirk resident chosen for the post by the county Democratic Party. Our issue is with the flagrant disregard for taxpayers shown by the legislature’s five Democrats Charles Nazzaro, Robert Whitney, Paul Whitford, all of Jamestown, Robert Bankoski of Dunkirk and Christine Starks of Fredonia who introduced the resolution for legislative action and put county taxpayers on the hook for a lawsuit over internal Democratic Party infighting.
