The Hudson River sloop Clearwater’s first captain, Allan J. Aunapu, died in an accident last Thursday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., at age 79, according to a news release from the Clearwater nonprofit organization.

An accomplished musician in addition to being an expert sailor, Aunapu skippered the Clearwater on its maiden voyage in 1969.
The first crew was made up largely of musicians, including Pete Seeger, Don McLean and first mate Gordon Bok. They sailed from Maine down the coast to New York Harbor stopping along the way to give fundraising concerts. ....
