Some waves were made to be ridden, some not so much. Brazil’s freak-of-nature novelty slab, called “Shock,” hovers somewhere right on the border.
The spine-twisting, surfboard-snapping, jet-ski-swallowing slab came to life this past week, with what some Rio de Janeiro locals are calling one of the biggest swells to hit the spot in a long time. And a handful of hearty chargers decided to roll the dice…see below.

Regarding the swell, Surfline’s Mike Watson explained: “This storm was pretty similar to the storm we saw back in February that set up the slab carnage in Rio but located just a little further south. The storm started to form on Sunday moving off the north Argentina coast while tracking off the east over the open Atlantic.
