you, i m devin dwyer. good to see you again, devin, i m rina ninan. starting to feel like summer out there. hot, muggy. two days away, official start of summer. it is here. it is here. lots of crazy weather. that s where we start. we begin with extreme weather from oppressive heat to more damaging twisters. that s right. several powerful tornados tore through the plains overnight. this one touching down in crow lake, south dakota, before first splitting apart and merging again. our coverage begins with abc s mary bruce. reporter: the national weather service says a twister went right through the heart of the town of westington springs, south dakota, damaging homes and businesses. tornadoes also touched down nearby. elsewhere, summer is around the corner. very hot. excruciating hot. reporter: a heat wave scorching 2/3 of the country. hottest city, washington d.c. with temperatures climbing to 94 degrees. cold water. $1. reporter: locals and tourists
devon and rina, if he is able to stay near water survival chances are higher. but time is running out. devon, rina. thank you so much, molly. our other major terror this half hour, wild weather raking over south dakota. this is just one of several powerful tornados that blew in last night. it actually split into two before becoming together. another twister swept into the north destroying more than a dozen homes and businesses in wessington springs. two people were injured. and the national guard has been called in to help. still two days before the official start of summer, but it s already heating up. across two-thirds of the country, washington d. d.c. was the hot spot of the day climbing well into the 90s. so hot, water fountains were filled with people trying to cool off. more of the same is on tap for today. we ll feel the temperatures in the nation s capital. and they will hit triple digits. not only hot but it is also dry. in the west there is some extreme fire danger. an

good morning, everyone, i m rina ninan. i m devin dwyer. we just cut a cake last show. kind of sticky hands. that was interesting. it was good, though. a lesson on how to cut the cake. if the white house gave a lesson on what to do with iraq, no one seems to know. we will start that way beginning with the crisis in iraq. president obama met with top congressional leaders at the white house last night to talk options. after the meeting the lawmakers said president obama does not plan to seek congressional approval to take any action. as the president considers his next steps, the militants continue to gain ground in iraq. they now threaten the country s largest oil refinery. abc s martha raddatz is there. reporter: it is the critical lifeline, iraq biggest oil refinery now partially ablaze. if the militants take it, they ll have the ability to control the sale of gasoline and cut power across parts of iraq. and they have the upper hand.
