Search On For New Berrien County Medical Director

There could be a new Berrien County Medical Director hired in May. Speaking to the Berrien County Board of Health Wednesday, Health Officer Nicki Britten said Dr. Rick Johansen is retiring and the county wants to find someone with local ties already established to take his place. A committee of seven members, including health board members and county commissioners, will review the applications once they’re done coming in next week. So far, Britten said the county’s gotten two. It’s hoped someone new can be picked in May so they can start soon after.

COVID Cases In Berrien County Trending Down

The COVID-19 situation in Berrien County has improved markedly since its worst point in November. Berrien County Health Officer Nicki Britten told the Berrien County Board of Health Wednesday Christmas and New Years have not caused an apparent spike in local COVID cases.
“On the whole, we are trending downward in terms of cases, and now we’re sitting between 35 and 45 new cases per day,” Britten said.
Britten said the percent of tests that come back positive is hovering around 10% in Berrien County, whereas it was about 20% five or six weeks ago. Hospitalizations are also down.
“I think our healthcare workers are still definitely feeling the stress and the strain of more people in the hospital, more cases, but there has definitely been relief over the last few weeks, and it’s very welcome relief.” ....

Health Department Lays Out Vaccine Strategy

The Berrien County Health Department has received its first shipment of COVID-19 vaccine, and is now administering it to frontline staff. Spokesperson Gillian Conrad tells WSJM News they got 1,400 doses last week.
“We were able to start vaccinating some of our frontline workers just before the holiday,” Conrad said. “This week, our focus is now turning to other emergency personnel, medical first responders, and some additional long-term care facility workers and residents.”
Conrad says hundreds of people have been vaccinated in Berrien County as the health department coordinates with Spectrum Health Lakeland.
“They are focusing on vaccinating their healthcare workers, their associates and team members, part of the hospital system, and we are focusing on vaccinating the healthcare workers that may not be affiliated with Lakeland.” ....

Berrien Health Department Receives Shipment Of COVID Vaccine

As of December 29
th, 2020, the Berrien County Health Department (BCHD) has received its initial allotment of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine doses. Frontline staff at the Health Department, including those who will be providing the vaccine to others, began receiving their first doses to prepare for the upcoming mass vaccination efforts.
Following guidance set forth by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, the Berrien County Health Department is currently focusing on providing vaccines to those individuals in Phase 1-A, Priority Groups 1 and 2, including Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel, medical first responders, and some long-term care facility workers and residents. Concurrently, local hospital systems are vaccinating their health care workers, and pharmacies are vaccinating residents and staff of most long-term care facilities.
