May 5, 2021 Dr. Rick Johansen has attended his final meeting of the Berrien County Board of Health as Berrien County Medical Director. The board on Wednesday read a resolution honoring the retiring director. The board’s Peg Kohring said Johansen has been medical director since 1999, and in the past has served as president of the Michigan Association of Public Health and Preventative Medicine Physicians, and as a member of the governor’s task force on child abuse and neglect. Johansen thanked the board of health. “It’s been a pleasure serving,” Johansen said. “To say it’s been rewarding would be a complete understatement. It’s a very rewarding job because there are so many varying and different things to do that affect a lot of people.” ....
April 7, 2021 There could be a new Berrien County Medical Director hired in May. Speaking to the Berrien County Board of Health Wednesday, Health Officer Nicki Britten said Dr. Rick Johansen is retiring and the county wants to find someone with local ties already established to take his place. A committee of seven members, including health board members and county commissioners, will review the applications once they’re done coming in next week.
