The spurs of a wild turkey. To make the Florida Wild Turkey Registry, a turkey s spurs must be at least 1.25 inches long.
While this information might not be relevant to a renowned jake killer such as myself, those hunters who successfully call in and harvest mature gobblers should keep the Florida Wild Turkey Registry in mind to see if their longbeards merit special state recognition.
The Wild Turkey Registry is a database maintained by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission of Osceola and Eastern wild turkeys that reach trophy proportions. To qualify, the beard must be 11 inches or longer, and each leg spur must meet or exceed 1.25 inches. Anyone meeting this criteria will receive an Outstanding Gobbler Certificate for the subspecies of turkey submitted and will be listed for posterity in the registry. ....

FWC celebrates 12 years of out-of-season largemouth bass spawning
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) Division of Freshwater Fisheries Management has successfully spawned Florida largemouth bass out of season for the twelfth year in a row at Richloam Fish Hatchery in Webster. This practice allows biologists to produce twice as many largemouth bass per year than other state’s hatchery systems whose hatcheries produce spawn only once a year. The benefit to the FWC is the efficiency of producing more fish without the added expense of collecting additional broodstock.
Freshwater fisheries biologists collected a total of 41 individual spawns during October 2020 that yielded over 250,000 fry, which were stocked in hatchery ponds to grow. A gobbler track along a dirt road. The only wild turkey sign Peter Updike, a long-time turkey hunter from Florida’s Lake County, had seen in three days of camping and hunting at Osceola Wildlife Management Area. Updike, not the least bit deterred by a challenging hunt, went back the next day, set up and harvested a mature gobbler.
“Having my efforts pay off – scouting, being patient and finding those areas on the WMA where others weren’t hunting – gave me a huge sense of accomplishment,” Updike said. “I really enjoy putting my skills to the test on a WMA.” ....
