Keys receive full funding from Stewardship Act


For the first time since the legislation’s inception, the Florida Keys will receive a full allocation from a state act designed to improve water quality in the chain of islands.
With the state legislative session ending today, the Keys are expected to receive a full $20 million allocation from the state Legislature for the Florida Keys Stewardship Act.
“I think we are in good shape from an appropriations standpoint,” said state House Rep. Jim Mooney, R-Islamorada. “Just have to hope no cuts from the governor. Still so much more we will need to get the roads elevated. My goal is to work on getting the funding from (the state) Resiliency Bill 7019. ....

Fishermen's decision dominates Marathon council meeting | Government / Politics


A relatively light Marathon City Council agenda opened Tuesday evening with a detailed pitch by Fishermen’s Community Hospital spokespeople for a continuation of the city’s support for the Municipal Services Taxing Unit (MSTU) to help pay for the rebuild of Fishermen’s Hospital and led to discussions on several additional local topics.
At last month’s council meeting, commissioners shared concerns regarding the city obtaining financial documents from Baptist Health South Florida before the May 1 deadline for the city to review and decide whether to vote to opt-in or opt-out of the MTSU. Those documents have now been received and reviewed. ....
