Resolution to name portion of US 150 after fallen Knox County Sheriff's Deputy passes Senate

State Senators Mike Halpin and Neil Anderson, along with Representative Dan Swanson, are honoring the life of Deputy Sheriff Nick Weist – who died in the line of duty – by passing a measure to memorialize parts of a Galesburg highway. "Honoring the life of Deputy Nick Weist is a way to show our gratitude and respect for his sacrifice," said Senator Halpin (D-Rock Island). "This memorial highway will serve as a constant reminder that speaks to his selflessness, and demonstrates we will not forget his sacrifice in serving and protecting the community." Knox County Deputy Weist lost his life on April 29, 2022, when he was struck and killed by a vehicle as he deployed spike strips during a vehicle pursuit of an armed subject. Deputy Weist had served with the Knox County Sheriff's Office for four years and previously served with the Mercer County Sheriff's Department and Aledo Police Department. Swanson votes against Senate version of assault weapons ban

The Illinois House on Tuesday voted and approved the Senate's version of the assault weapons ban, HB 5471. The bill's sponsor says the bill will prevent the sale, manufacture, possession, and purchase of assault-style weapons, assault weapon attachments, and .50 caliber cartridges in the state. Rep. Dan Swanson (R-Alpha) voted against the measure, saying this bill would damage Illinois businesses and punish law-abiding gun owners. "It's those of us who have guns or those of us who have our FOIDs and CCLs who will be punished," Swanson said on the House Floor on Tuesday. "And, not the criminal for using that as a tool for committing a crime." The bill would also expedite the implementation of universal background checks but would not change the age range of the Firearms Owners Identification cards. Upon passage from the house, Gov. Illinois Chapter of A.B.A.T.E. recognizes Swanson as Representative of the Year

Republican State Representative Dan Swanson of Alpha was recognized last weekend as 2022 Representative of the Year by the Illinois Chapter of A.B.A.T.E., or A Brotherhood Aimed Towards Education. Swanson was recognized during the organization's Freedom Rally in Springfield and was presented with a special leather vest for the annual recognition with A.B.A.T.E. members from around the state. State Legislative Coordinator for A.B.A.T.E., Josh Witkowski, spoke of Swanson's support for motorcycle enthusiasts' safety by putting up banners for years on his farm.
