Legislation classifying Illinois dispatchers as first responders clears legislature

A bill that would give Illinois emergency dispatchers more benefits and officially classify the profession as first responders could soon be sent to the governor. Senate Bill 3127 was filed by State Senator Neil Anderson of Andalusia and provides that emergency dispatchers are now COVID-19 first responders. If signed by Governor J.B. Pritzker, emergency dispatchers would qualify for extra medical benefits, mental health benefits, and extra funding for the industry. Anderson explained during a news conference Wednesday why this bill was important to pass. "Dispatchers are there to answer the initial call on what 99% of the time is someone's worst day of their entire life," Anderson said. "These men and women deal with critical situations and they are our eyes and ears for police, fire, and E.M.S." Swanson's resolution recognizing Lyme Disease awareness passes Illinois House

A resolution to urge the federal government to allocate funds to find a cure for Lyme Disease passed the Illinois House on Thursday morning. State Representative Dan Swanson of Alpha sponsored House Resolution 780 which aims to find a cure for the disease and declares May of 2022 as Lyme Disease Awareness Month in the state. "The data shows today that the average of 34 percent, or one out of every three ticks, is infected with Lyme Disease. Lyme Disease has been detected in Deer Ticks in 36 counties," said Swanson from the House floor this week. "Illinois' highest county is Winnebago County at 66 percent, Jo Daviess and Putnam Counties are at 59 percent infect of those Deer Ticks detected." Swanson says that the Illinois Department of Public Health has put together a map to track the progress of Lyme throughout the state. Swanson reacts to report on outbreak at LaSalle Veterans Home

The outbreak of COVID-19 at the LaSalle Veterans’ Home last year led to the deaths of 36 veterans and positive tests from 200 residents and staff at the nursing home.
Alpha Representative Dan Swanson, whose district includes the northern half of Galesburg, lays the blame for what happened at the LaSalle Veterans’ Home on the feet of Governor JB Pritzker who was critical of former-Governor Bruce Rauner following an outbreak of Legionella at the Quincy Veterans’ Home.
“Governor, when you made a political issue out of our veterans’ deaths at Quincy, I gave you the benefit of doubt it was about protecting our heroes and not scoring political points on dead veterans.
