Were able to elect democratic governors, and that s going to be important as we approach 2024 particularly in protecting democracy and protecting people from these terrible laws that maga republicans now clearly have control of their party and we know where they re going with bad legislation. it s more important than ever for people to vote and to make sure they vote all up and down the ballot because every single election is important. governor, why do you think republicans do this on abortion in particular? you know, well, i think really are gerrymandered districts have something to do with it because i think you see republicans in these very red districts only worry about primary opposition. and they look at it politically so they get as far to the right as they possibly can. you know, and this is why we need independent redistricting commissions in every state. ....

Gerrymandered districts across the board. we need independent redistricting commissions. i ve promised many times that if democrats ever get control, we re going to institute independent commissions. there s no perfect way to draw districts, but this is not the right way to do it because it clearly does not reflect what the people of north carolina think on this issue and many others. we re having a battle over public education right now in our state. they re trying to chose public education with private school vouchers for millionaires and cutting taxes. it goes on and on. it s frustrating. we re going to fight every single day in the state. we have one of the best states in the country. we re the number one state in the country for business. we believe that we re going to continue to work to do the best that we can to protect women s health in our state. democratic governor roy cooper of north carolina, thank you very much. we ll be watching. coming up, we re going to ....

Be elected. that shows you the purple nature of north carolina yet we now have a republican supreme court that s overturned that. it s going to allow them to go back to partisan gerrymandering. probably going to see a 10 to 4 at best. they go house by house. they look at numbers. we see it all over the country. we need independent redistricting commissions to make these decisions. until then, we have to justify like hell, ali, and to work to turn out people. we re gonna make sure we got candidates in every legislative district this fall. we re gonna make sure that we work to break that supermajority because when we do that, we have a democratic governor. and you don t have a supermajority republican legislature. you can stop all of the bad legislation for four years i have vetoed bad abortion pills, bad discrimination bills. bills that hurt education. ....

Years to eight years, ten years, and we have got an excellent caucus, we have got incredible partner in governor whitmer, so we are very optimistic that we will be able to make a difference. really, in many cases, offset the negative impact of the unknown creativity of the congress at this time. can i just ask you one more question, in terms of how democrats got to power, in michigan there was an independent redistricting commission. and that wasn t 2021, it created competitive maps. and the end result is that democrats have taken over. democrats have won the trifecta. what should we read into that? should there be more independent commissions? should we take gerrymandering off of the table? should we allow independent bodies to decide the congressional maps, to decide the state maps, and what does that say about the republican party? we should absolutely have more independent redistricting commissions and every state. it works very effectively here. ....
