Making voting a national holiday. almost haing a no excuse absentee voter system and has allowances for people to provide other documents to prove who they are. i will tell you there are a number of things on there shining the light on money, having independent redistricting commissions instead of elected politicians drawing on congressional districts, all of these things are really heaven sent for us in texas and we re looking forward to the senate hopefully having a vote sometime in the coming days. representative reynolds, we have been following this so closely and you have been living it day to day that it is sort of easy to lose track of how wild this has all been, that have state legislators haing to escape their state. you then have cross suits between these legislators and their governor that in the midst all happening in the midst of a pandemic, right? it is easy to lose track of that though less easy given you have a few of your colleagues who had ....

You were in congress. what should the expectation of the federal government be? and if you were given a private audience with manchin, what would your advice to him be? he wants to be on the right side of history. the people of the future are going to look back on those of us alive with the opportunity to do something about the erosion of voting rights and the very possible destruction of our democracy in 2021. i want them to be proud of us and the people that we are and the fight that we re waging and the victory that we will win if we stand together and use that political majority that senator manchin is part of in the united states senate and pass, as bishop barber said, the full for the people act. automatic voter registration, election day a national holiday, getting dark money out of our politics and ending gerrymandering with independent redistricting commissions. this is really popular, especially in west virginia. so let s get this thing passed and ensure that we have a demo ....

Right, i would say that a lot of my colleagues and peers have never been comfortable talking about term limits. but how do you get federal lawmakers to feel the pressure? how do you get them to feel what s going on? from these state lawmakers in texas saying, hey, feel something with us. these people who have been in washington for so long, how can we expect them to feel something? we can t, when they ve been in office as long as they have been. so what i m saying is this. so when we talk about reform, let s talk about multi-prong. we need to talk about term limits and gerrymandering reform. figuring out how to create more bipartisan redistricting commissions. and ranked-choice voting, it s an all of of the above approach. you cannot get someone to experience our lived experience, when you re a black and brown person, you ve just got to be in our shoes. so how best to do it? how best to do it? you ve got to get them to sit down and to understand reform. and reform starts with talking a ....

There s a really important aspect to this. so when joe manchin says, look, it s an 800 page bill, it s true, the for the people act has a lot of provisions, a lot of campaign finance stuff, there s voting access but independent, basically independent commissions, nonpartisan gerrymandering is a big part of that bill, and it just seems to me hey, there s two things to note about that. one is, it really would be nonpartisan in the sense that there are states that democrats control where they could probably put the screws to republicans on redistricting, and they would have to have independent commissions too. it genuinely is the proposal in that bill, a legitimately neutral means of handling this problem. and it s in fact the thing that i think distinguishes us at the ndrc from those who oppose us. we support 100% the implementation of nonpartisan, independent redistricting commissions. in fact, we have fought to get them put in place in michigan, ....

That bill, a legitimate neutral means of handling this problem. and it s in fact the thing that i think distinguishes us, and the drc who oppose us. we support 100% the implementation of non, independent redistricting commissions. in fact, we have fought to have them put in place in michigan, and colorado, and utah. then republicans never say that they are in favor of that. they understand that they ve got to keep their thumb on the scale. they need to have an ability to impact the redistricting process in an unfair way if they are going to hold on to the power that they got illegitimately in 2011. independent commissions are, i think, the best way to go about the redistricting process and that is a core part of for the people act. what do you think about, do you have advice to state legislatures controlled by democrats? because it does seem to me, and ....
