it premieres sunday. that s tonight actually. tonight at: 9:00. the next hour of cnn newsroom starts right now. hello again, everyone. we begin this hour in selma, alabama where just moments ago president biden arrived to mark the 59th anniversary of what s known as bloody sunday. marchers included the late congressman john lewis were beaten by white state trooper as they tried to cross the pettis bridge. arlette, the president is expected to give a speech. set the stage for us now. president biden s speech here in selma has two purposes. first off the white house said that he wants to ensure that the memory of what happened on that day 58 years ago is not a race from american history. and, secondly, the president is expected to once again make the case for voting rights. that brutal day here in selma, alabama, really served as a significant moment in the civil rights movement and led to the signing of the voting rights act. what the president has repeatedly tried to do
counting down the three weeks left until midterm elections. early voting is currently underway in several states. candidates are squaring off in debates going this weekend, and as the clock runs out, democrats are calling on their biggest guns, president joe biden is in oregon today stumping for the democrats in that state gubernatorial race, which has become surprisingly close in a reliably blue state. vice president, kamala harris, is in michigan pushing early voting and raising money for democratic governor, gretchen whitmer s reelection campaign. and then there s the news this morning that former president, barack obama, will kick off his own midterm campaign travel with stops in at least three swing states later this month. michigan, wisconsin, and, of course, georgia. where democratic senator, raphael warnock, and his republican challenger, herschel walker, face off in their sole debate last night. walker, if nothing else, seemed to be working from the playbook populari
before, zoe lofgren leading that second hearing and pete auilar talking about the pressure campaign on mike pence. this will focus on the pressure campaign at the state level. they re going to use, as you mentioned, lawmakers from georgia to make that point. of course, that s one of the key states that we know that former president trump was pressuring election officials to overturn the election results or at least, in his words, find the overrule 11,000 votes that he would need in order to win georgia, which he actually lost. they re also likely to delve deeper into the idea of fake slates of electors. that s something that john eastman was pressuring former vice president mike pence on. we heard about that last week. but now we may hear a little bit more about the plots at the state level beyond just georgia that the white house and his allies were using at the time to try to find any way to keep the former president in power. and vaughan, former vice president mike pence
