The Recordings Program. It is quite wonderful actually to be here with everybody. It is something of a reunion in fact since kent was with us for years and years and spending his time at university of South Carolina. For the next 75 minutes, well share with you insights from the secret white house tapes. And well look to explore the dynamics therein and to relate them to see what kind of questions they prompt us to ask about contemporary dynamics about the history they contain, about parallels to todays events, about the practice of democracy itself. Just a word about the Recordings Program, we were established in 1998. And our goal, we are the only institution of its kind doing it, is to analyze and transcribe the secret president ial tapes that president s made from 1940 through 1973. That is from Franklin Roosevelt through Richard Nixon. We do this work at the Miller Center. We actually do it off site as well because so much of the work these days is browserbased. Barbara, is herself a noted scholar sft kennedy era and clan. Shes also the director of president ial studies here at the Miller Center. She is a very seasoned export, oral historian as well as written historian. And for many years she helped lead the Oral History Program here at the Miller Center which was one of the signature undertakings that we do in interviewing the leading members of president ial administrations from the ford years on up until the present. Or at least i should say the recent past. We have completed oral histories under her leadership and Russell Riley of every administration through the george w. Bush administration and we are planning to lay seeing to the Obama Administration and well find out what the Trump Administration what their attitude is towards being interviewed for oral history when we get to that. [inaudible conversations] [inaudible conversations] it is great to have you here. With longstanding friends of the center it is a pleasure to be here today and what has been a terrific project much of the last three years at the Miller Center with a firstyear project we are now one year and one week into the President Trump administration and we started to plan this effort in the spring of 2015 shortly after i arrived at the center but it really came from the center itself. There was a real question when i came in as a new director how we think about the upcoming three years with president ial elections almost two years out from when i had arrived and we thought about taking the extraordinary Historical Archive that we have built and her own scholars and network and with future administrations. After several weeks of planning we came back with this idea of the governing council to build human, Financial Support support for the effort. It has been a Terrific Team effort to bring togethe
