The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) issued a rule on December 2
nd (read more here) that airlines in the US would no longer be required to transport emotional support animals (ESA) and they only need to accept trained dogs as service animals.
Alaska Airlines announced yesterday that it would only accept emotional support animals through February 28, 2021, for tickets issued by January 11. Also, the airline will only accept trained dogs as service animals from January 11.

Following recent changes to U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) rules, Alaska Airlines will no longer accept emotional support animals on its flights. Effective Jan. 11, 2021, Alaska will only transport service dogs, which are specially trained to perform tasks for the benefit of a qualified individual with a disability. ....

Alaska Airlines to Ban Emotional Support Animals From All Flights

Alaska Airlines will soon no longer allow emotional support animals (ESAs) on any flights.
According to a release from the airline, the decision was made following recent changes to the U.S. Department of Transportation s (DOT) rules. In early December, DOT announced, among other changes, that airlines are allowed to treats ESAs as pets, not as service animals. This distinction allows airlines to strip ESAs of the privileges that are given to service animals onboard flights which include boarding for free, ignoring weight, size, and capacity restrictions placed on passenger pets traveling in the cabin, and sitting outside of a carrier for the flight. ....

Alaska Airlines is the first US carrier to ban emotional support animals on its flights following a Department of Transportation ruling that airlines will only be required to transport service dogs.
Beginning January 11, the airline will allow only service dogs that are specially trained and will refuse transport to emotional support animals.

The DOT rule change came early this month following the agency s decision to revise its Air Carrier Access legislation because passengers have for years been requesting airlines accept their service pigs, rabbits and peacocks.
