Winter Haven man charged with armed sexual battery

A Winter Haven man was arrested Tuesday after the Polk County Sheriff s Office said he sexually battered another man at a motel at knifepoint and stole his belongings.
Thomas Lee Simmons, 37, of Winter Haven was charged with one count each of armed sexual battery, armed robbery, grand theft, dealing in stolen property and giving false information to a law enforcement officer, according to a PCSO news release on Wednesday.
The victim told deputies he had been talking with a man through a dating website and arranged to meet him at the Stay Plus Inn in Haines City.
The victim, who was already in the hotel room, said that Simmons entered the room and pulled out a knife and told him to strip naked. The man said Simmons then told him he was with the narcotics unit and other officers were outside the room. ....

Man charged with DUI manslaughter in crash that killed of 2 Lakeland men

A Highland City man was arrested on charges of DUI manslaughter for his role in the deaths of two Lakeland men during a crash in Lakeland on Nov. 20.
Polk County Sheriff s Office deputies arrested Justin Mathis, 31, of Highland City, on Tuesday. Mathis was the driver in the fatal crash that killed Christopher Lofton, 34, and David Weldon, 38.
About 9:30 p.m. on Nov. 20, Mathis was driving a 2018 Chevy Silverado pickup south on U.S. 98 South near County Road 540-A when he collided with a semi-truck driven by Daniel Mariscal, 59, of Tampa. The passenger side of the Silverado became wedged underneath the left rear of the semi s 53-foot box trailer. ....

20 people arrested in Fort Meade area on drug-related charges
FORT MEADE Twenty people were arrested Tuesday after citizen complaints about illegal drug sales near a grocery store spurred a Polk County Sheriff s Office investigation.
The Sheriff s Office said citizens had called attention to drug sales around the area of the L&F Grocery Store on MLK Boulevard.
Deputies executed a search warrant at 200 2nd St. SE in Fort Meade, where 10 of the 20 arrests were made.
“Some people think that the possession and sale of drugs are low-level, non-violent crimes, but these are quality of life issues that, if not kept in check, disrupt the peace and tranquility of our community, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said. We responded to complaints in the area, and we are returning peace and tranquility to the people of Fort Meade. ....

Polk deputies assist in breaking up theft ring

Members of the Polk County Sheriff s Office, along with statewide agencies, helped break up a theft and racketeering ring that targeted 18 counties around the state, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said Friday.
The suspects targeted Publix, Winn-Dixie and Walmart stores and stole high-dollar items such as baby formula, diapers and energy drinks and then sold them to other suspects that would resell the items out of their stores, the sheriff said.
Seven suspects were arrested, while one remains wanted. Five suspects were arrested Wednesday in Hillsborough County and one in Orlando. Another turned herself in to Polk County deputies Thursday. ....

Lakeland man killed in stolen motorcycle crash

Bebee crashed into a white Cadillac SRV driven by Judith Terraza, 49, of Mulberry. Bebee, who was not wearing a helmet, was ejected from the motorcycle and into the southbound lanes of SR 37.
A PCSO deputy who witnessed the crash began life-saving measures on Bebee while Polk County Fire Rescue was dispatched to the scene. Bebee was transported to Lakeland Regional Health, where he died.
Terraza, who was wearing a seatbelt, was not injured.
SR37 at Shepherd Road was closed for approximately three hours during the investigation. Detectives learned Bebee didn t have a motorcycle endorsement and that the bike was stolen. ....
