An early Saturday morning crash claimed the life of a Lakeland man. At around 2:13 a.m. Saturday, the Polk County Sheriff s Communications Center received a 911 call regarding a crash involving a single vehicle on Galloway Road, north of Hawks Ridge Drive in Lakeland. First responders discovered Colby Holtz, 27 of Lakeland, deceased on the scene. A front-seat passenger, Dylan Still, 27 of Lakeland, was located still in the car. Still was taken to Lakeland Regional Health Center with a cut to his forehead and was listed in stable condition. The preliminary report states that Holtz was driving a Ford Taurus west on Galloway Road at a high speed when he failed to navigate a curve north of Hawks Ridge Drive. The car went off the west side of the road heading south where it hit a guidewire, which sent it into a tree, a chain link fence and down an embankment before coming to rest in the backyard of 3300 Hawks Ridge Drive. ....
A former Ohio police officer was arrested Tuesday after Haines City police said he made threats online about committing violent acts in the nation s capital. Shannon Badgett, 53, of Haines City is in the Polk County Jail on a charge of communicating a written threat to conduct a mass shooting or terrorism after making posts on his Facebook account, Haines City police said. Police said Badgett was disgruntled about the recent election and lashed out in a series of posts that caught the eye of authorities.
