The new
Gossip Girl is glossed up, smoothed down, diversified out, and so keenly aware of the original that it sometimes feels like it’s about to disappear up its own ouroboros. Given the generous budget you’d expect from a new streaming service in search of a tentpole (HBO Max), the souffle rises wonderfully in the visual sense, but the air quickly starts leaking.
Which isn’t to say that you won’t find yourself sucked in as we return once more to the sister schools serving the entitled, bratty offspring of Manhattan’s super-rich. Nicknamed “Dr. Death,” the story of Duntsch’s egregious medical crimes and the healthcare system that failed so many by allowing him to practice received the podcast treatment in 2018 from Wondery, the team behind
“Dirty John.” Premiering Thursday on Peacock, the television adaptation features
“The Affair’s” Joshua Jackson as the charming yet sinister Duntsch.
“In doing a television version of [‘Dr. Death’], we actually had the time and the opportunity to do a bit of a deeper dive into the story than the podcast was able to,” says showrunner Patrick Macmanus.
