diesel: Crude oil price surge pushes up prices of edible oils and spices in a fortnight


Synopsis
In the past fortnight, crude palm oil prices have shot up to $1,110 per tonne from $1,040 per tonne. Similarly, soybean oil prices have gone up to $1,270 per tonne from $1,190 per tonne.
India depends on imported edible oils to meet its domestic demand. Along with rising edible oil prices, consumers may feel the pinch from higher prices of spices too.
Increasing crude oil prices have pushed up prices of edible oils 7% in the past fortnight as countries across the globe have stepped up use of bio-diesel in order to bring down fuel prices. To add to the woes of consumers, prices of spices, particularly turmeric and chillies, which add flavour to the Indian platter, have increased 6-7% in the past ten days in anticipation of lower production and higher export demand. ....
