New Delhi: The railways on Friday said there is no plan to curtail or stop train services and assured passengers that trains will be provided on demand amidst reports of migrant workers rushing to their hometowns, reminiscent of the days following the coronavirus-triggered lockdown.
A number of officials, including Railway Board Chairman Suneet Sharma, General Manager, Southern Railway John Thomas and the chief public relations officers (CPROs) of the Northern and Central Railways, reached out to the media to deny reports of an exodus of migrant workers to their hometowns via trains.

This apart, the government also suspended all public transport from Odisha to Chhattisgarh and vice versa from April 10 till April 30, 2021. The incoming persons shall have to give an undertaking to this effect and submit form containing name of the person, from where they are coming, the address of destination, mobile number and alternate contact number.

Indian Railways Surpasses Last Year s Cumulative Freight Loading Despite Covid-19 Challenges

The Indian Railways on Friday (12 March) said that its total freight loading for financial year 2020-21 had surpassed that of the previous fiscal.
Addressing a press conference, Railway Board Chairman and CEO Suneet Sharma said it is a huge achievement given the coronavirus pandemic had disrupted rail movement. On 11 March 2021, Indian Railwaysâ cumulative freight loading touched 1145.68 million tonnes (MT) which is higher than total cumulative loading of last year (1145.61 million tonnes), the Ministry of Railways said in a statement on Friday (12 March).

Rail freight chugs ahead in full steam
Despite taking a major hit on freight traffic in the first four months of the current financial year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Indian Railways has surpassed the cumulative freight loading till date this fiscal against 2019-20.
According to the Ministry of Railways, 1,145.68 million tonnes of freight loading has been achieved till date in the current financial year against 1,145.61 million tonnes in 2019-20. It may be noted that the incremental loading in the first four months of the fiscal witnessed a deficit of 70 million tonne over the same period of the previous year.
