GUWAHATI: In what could be the first known instance of an entire pachyderm herd being wiped out in a lightning strike anywhere in the northeast, the corpses of 18 adult elephants were found scattered across a proposed sanctuary in central Assam’s Nagaon district on Thursday morning, hours after a storm blew over.
“Fourteen of the elephants were found dead atop a hill while the rest were at the foot of the elevated portion of the Kundoli reserve forest under Kathiatoli range,” principal chief conservator of forests (wildlife) Amit Sahay said. “The animals were probably huddled together when a bolt of lightning struck during the severe storm on Wednesday night.” ....

The Assam government on Friday decided to conduct forensic tests of the 18 elephants that reportedly died due to lightning two days ago in Barhampur area of Nagaon district.
The bodies of the elephants, all adults and sub-adults, were buried on Friday after a team of veterinarians conducted the post-mortem. Some remains have been sent to the state forensic laboratory in Guwahati for further tests. ....

Preliminary investigation suggests the elephants could have been struck by lightning
GUWAHATI: Eighteen elephants of a herd were found dead inside a reserve forest in Assam’s Nagaon district on Thursday morning.
Though preliminary investigation by the state forest department suggests that the pachyderms could have been struck by lightning, environmentalists have demanded a thorough probe to find out if there was any foul play.
On Thursday night, the forest department set up an investigation team to ascertain the cause of death of the elephants. The team will also inspect the site of the tragedy, including water and salt lick quality. ....

The world’s wettest place in North East India is witnessing a decline in rainfall
The phenomenon is driven by changes in the Indian Ocean temperature and conversion of forestlands and vegetation cover to croplands in the last two decades.

An analysis of 119 years of rainfall measurements at different rain gauge stations across North East India, has revealed a decreasing trend in summer rainfall since 1973, including in rainy Meghalaya, reputed for hosting the world’s wettest place.
The study has said that the decline in rainfall is driven by changes in the Indian Ocean temperature and conversion of forestlands and vegetation cover to croplands in the last two decades. These long-term rainfall changes in the region are responsible for the observed shift of the world’s wettest place from Cherrapunji to Mawsynram (separated by 15-km) in recent decades.
