After a year of forced dormancy, the restaurant industry is scrambling to get ready for an expected boom this summer. That means hiring back some of the thousands of workers who’ve been without jobs or steady hours over the past year because of pandemic closings and restrictions.
Yet despite a massive labor pool, some restaurants say they are having trouble finding people willing to return to the business. The pandemic, it seems, prompted some to reconsider life in an industry notorious for difficult working conditions. ....

Women-owned restaurants in Boston have teamed up for a powerhouse dinner

In July of 2020, Rohini Dey owner of Chicago’s Vermilion restaurant wanted to create a movement for women restaurateurs to connect with each other while trying to keep their businesses afloat during the pandemic, sharing resources, offering support, and combining economic power.
The initiative was called Let’s Talk Womxn, and launched with 15 members in Chicago before swiftly expanding to include more than 350 members across 12 cities, including Boston. To celebrate International Women’s Day, Let’s Talk Womxn will debut its first nationwide event and you’re invited.
Nine cities will participate in “Dine Together & Let’s Talk” on March 8, when women restaurateurs will join together and create multi-course meals paired with a Zoom conversation moderated by prominent movers and shakers, including Mass. Mamaleh's comes to Brookline with crowdfunded restaurant

Brookline’s deli scene is expanding with the addition of Mamaleh’s Delicatessen, set to open in Washington Square next summer.
Mamaleh’s, which first opened in Cambridge’s Kendall Square in 2016, will be located at 1659 Beacon St., a former Dunkin’ located next to The Abbey. The deli plans to open by the end of the summer, and the new location will include outdoor seating and counter service, according to a press release. 
Mamaleh’s menu features timeless deli staples such as lox, pastrami, corned beef and pickles, as well as a few traditional options like tongue and chopped liver. On the sweeter side, there are offerings like babka french toast, served with raspberry preserves made in-house. The Brookline location will also have grab-and-go breakfast, lunch and dinner options, according to the press release. ....

Mamaleh’s Delicatessen recently launched a $180,000 crowdfunding campaign to open in Brookline in summer 2021. 
In partnership with NuMarket, Mamaleh’s will offer its network of loyal customers a 20% increase on any amount contributed toward the campaign with dining credits that can be used toward future purchases. The restaurant is among the first in Boston to pilot the NuMarket community financing platform designed by and for local businesses to survive in the COVID-19 era.
