James W. Lyon, Sr. achieved a level of success in his career, and his life, to which many can only aspire. Born and raised in Raceland, with his two brothers, Lyon graduated (and was salutatorian) from Raceland High School in 1949.
Lyon went on to earn his law degree from the University of Kentucky in 1955 and returned home to begin his law firm in Raceland. After moving his law firm to Greenup, he married Jean, the love of his life, and began a family of his own. ....

City of Raceland pursues trial: Longtime senior center tenants face possible eviction

RACELAND A special judge in Greenup County has asked attorneys to submit legal briefs after conducting a short bench trial Monday in which the City of Raceland is pursuing an eviction against a long-standing tenant of the senior center.
At issue is one word: club.
See, back in 1993 the Raceland Area Senior Citizens Organization entered into a $1 per year lease with the city for the building. Characterized Monday by defense attorney Bruce Blackburn as a “very one-sided agreement,” the lease left the city on the hook for utilities, maintenance and insurance costs on the building.
For the Seniors Citizens Organization part, they were obligated to keep the building clean and put on programming for the area’s seniors. ....

Follow the muse: Former Raceland teacher turns retirement into writing career

ASHLAND Teaching at Raceland High School in the early 1960s launched the education career of Marie Parsons. Retirement launched her writing career.
The Pike County native recently released a book of poems called “An Echo In The Wind,” but it’s not her first book. She authored a novel titled “The Devil’s Back” in 2015.
“I retired in 2003 and for several years didn’t know what to do with the rest of my life. Eating and traveling were not quite enough,” she said. “A friend got me interested in attending the Appalachian Writers Workshop in Hindman. I began writing memoir, but soon discovered I didn’t like revealing so much about myself. Then I turned to short stories, and before I knew it, the stories had morphed into a novel.” ....

Judge Brian McCloud has served as Greenup County District Judge for 15 years, and now he will be bringing that experience to his new position as Circuit Judge for Greenup and Lewis Counties.
McCloud, who is proud of being born and raised in Wurtland graduated from Raceland High School in 1990. He attended law school in Louisville, graduating from the University of Louisville Louis D. Brandeis School of Law in 1997.    
“And then I opened my own law office in Raceland,” McCloud said.
McCloud was elected District Judge in 2005 and said it is a position that came with a lot of responsibility, which was something he was not going to take lightly. ....
