Our view: The NCHSAA can be saved


Small-government Republicans in Raleigh have a super-sized addiction to irony.
The more they preach the gospel of reducing the size of government, the more humongous and overbearing they seem to make it.
So far, they’ve poked their noses into local tree-cutting and civil rights ordinances, the fates of local statues and memorials, various and sundry issues on individual UNC System campuses, public notice advertising in newspapers, and school board and city council elections, to name only a few.
Now, some of them are hell-bent on dissolving the N.C. High School Athletic Association and replacing it with a new state commission appointed by politicians. ....

Raleigh, N.C. After just over two hours behind closed doors, some Republican members of the state legislature emerged with representatives of the N.C. High School Athletic Association with an optimistic tone about the path forward.
With House Bill 91 looming, a bill that would dissolve the NCHSAA, the two groups met to discuss concerns lawmakers have about the association s oversight, finances, and rules
It was a great meeting. We really appreciated the chance to get in there. I think we got a lot accomplished and I think everybody s in a better place now, said NCHSAA Board of Directors President Bobby Wilkins, who is the principal at Hendersonville High School. ....

We have the tools
Can you imagine sending a child outside to play in the middle of winter without a coat, hat or gloves? They would be unprotected from the cold and risk their health. That’s what it will be like if we send our unvaccinated kids to school without masks.
Masks work in preventing the spread of COVID-19. The Duke Collaborative Study, which included our school district, showed how effective N.C. schools were at preventing the transmission of COVID-19 last year. The study’s authors stated, “With masking, the schools clearly can safely deliver face-to-face education for children and adults.” They went on to say that remote education is not necessary; we have the tools to safely and successfully have in-person instruction. ....
