In a year dominated by the pandemic, other pressing health crises have moved to the back burner, where they continue to simmer with the threat of boiling over. Yet, 2020 also brought a 20% increase in deaths from Alzheimer’s disease a sleeper public health emergency with ominous ramifications for our aging society.
As the Biden administration embarks on its quest for grand legislative victories, a propitious place to start will be to make good on its popular campaign promise to tackle Alzheimer’s disease and related issues of elder care, including support for overburdened caregivers. Far-reaching investment in a moonshot for the cure and sweeping reforms to transform senior care cannot come too soon. The COVID-19 pandemic fundamentally altered how elected officials interact with their constituents, but the Alzheimer’s Association and the Alzheimer’s Impact Movement (AIM), a separately incorporated advocacy affiliate of the Association, along with dedicated advocates,
continued advancing critical federal and state policy priorities in FY20.
As a result of efforts led by the Association and AIM, a
$350 million increase for Alzheimer’s and dementia research funding at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) was signed into law. Funding at the NIH is now $2.8 billion annually, a more than six-fold increase since the passage of the National Alzheimer’s Project Act (NAPA) in 2011. Longtime bipartisan congressional champions, including Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) and Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.), were instrumental in securing this necessary increase. The bill also included $10 ....
