Evidence, including evidence not introduced into the state criminal trial. ben, one could argue that the other part of this case involved guns. under florida s self-defense law, a person has, quote, no duty to retreat. at this point, does the naacp start looking at seeking to have the law changed, not only in florida, but perhaps in other states with similar statutes? yes. in fact, we ve been focused on that for the past year, across the country. we ve been able, in the lower 48 states, to block stand your ground laws in many places. we ve not seen one passed in the continental u.s. this year. we have also been able to push successfully, to get tough anti-racial profiling bills passed in places like new york city, with a veto-proof vote. and so we have to stay focused, ....

About police racial profiling. i don t even know what to do with the fact we re about civilians racially profiling and civilians, as long as it expands to where you can carry and then expand the laws to not only carry but discharge a fire article and then not to go jail. you re going to encourage more carrying, morning use of the gun. encourage less restraint. you know that at least in states with strong powerful gun laws, you really have to way out if you discharge a fair article. all you have to do is make sure there is no one who witnessed it other than you. melissa harris perry, this conversation going on among civil rights leaders. reverend al sharpton, what do we do with this, how do we move forward. your closing thoughts will. lisa bloom made me smile. you may have heard me say my father who was in the civil rights movement, always signed my birthday cards, the struggle continues even when i was a little kid. i basically heard lisa bloom who ....

Jeopardy laws. how likely is the justice department to pursue something like this? it would not be double jeopardy. the hate crime statute is a separate federal statute. as i said, it speaks to bodily injury because of race, as ben just pointed out, not only did the prosecution and the defense keep race out of the state trial, the judge ordered it out. she would not allow the words racial profiling, for example, to be used. they could only talk about profiling. much of the evidence that we know about that ben described in terms of mr. zimmerman s past conduct, as it relates to race, was not introduced into this case. so we d be talking about a different frame. and in fact, a different violation. and so it s hard to say at this point what the outcome of such an investigation would be. but there s certainly more than enough in this case to warrant a serious federal a sharp look at whether or not the hate crime statute could be invoked in this case, looking at all the ....

It is not because of his shoe size. the only reason that george zimmerman looked out the window of the suv and considered trayvon martin to be an a-hole and a punk, he was a young african-american male. and george zimmerman knew he was up to no good for that reason. because 100% of the time, when he had called the cops about a suspicious person in the neighborhood, it was about an african-american male. the prosecution fought to get that into the trial themselves would have been that battle. it was admitted. they were absolutely silent on it in closing argument of something had to have happened in the middle of the trial for them to say we won t talk about race. if you don t make the decision to explain racial profiling to a jury who perhaps is not conversant in it. to explain that one burglar does not mean that all african-americans are criminals themselves really missed an tunnel. and they missed onle other subjects as well. i talked about it throughout the trial. it was very disappo ....

Upward position. the camera s pointed upward, right, as if he s some shirtless thug on the streets, right? and so that was the image they wanted to portray. they slid that picture in at the end over the state s objection at the last minute and the court let it in. i think that was totally wrong. totally wrong because it started to create the wrong image. in their minds, they could probably never identify with that man they saw in the picture in this case. maya, it really seems you talked earlier about sort of the way profiling happens, the brain science of it. and the defense was trying to get the white jury to profile trayvon martin the same way that there is a social, psychological term for this in the research. it s called priming. when you you can prime an image of a black person to the criminal that will increase the implicit bias of the viewer. you can prime in a way that ....
