Has gotten national attention, race, and the role of race in this trial. i want both of you to weigh in, but first to you, sunny, what in the trial, what role has race played in the trial that you have seen or not? you know, it certainly may have been the elephant in the room, but no one talked about race in the room. in fact, in closing, the government said to the jury, john guy said to the jury this is not about race. certainly there was the argument i think early on that the government s theory was based on racial profiling, but the word racial profiling was not introduced in this trial. in fact, what they refer to was criminal profiling. that s completely appropriate because there were other young black teens that george zimmerman says were burglarizing homes and he identified trayvon martin as another person possibly burglarizing homes. ....

Right now everybody is waiting to see what the verdict will be, like everybody else. the white house has not said much just yet because they don t want to tamper with the process. trayvon martin s death ignited a national firestorm. tugging at the sensitive nature of race relations. racial profiling has to stop, mr. speaker. just because somebody wears a hoodie does not make them a hoodlum. and prompting the first african-american president to take the unusual step of speaking out and sympathizing with martin s parents. if i had a son he would look like trayvon, and, you know, i think that they are right to expect that all of us as americans are going to take this with the seriousness it deserves ....

well, let me say this, we don t know george zimmerman, and in fact, i heard ben say today when asked that same question, we could never call that man a racist. now, we believed that this case in its totality has a racial undertone to it. and so that s a huge difference, anderson. i want to play something that you said back in march of last year for our viewers. whether or not trayvon was a perfect student is irrelevant to whether zimmerman s conduct that night was justified. trayvon was a kid. he was another unarmed black boy whose life was lost because of unfounded stereotyp, suspicions and fears. during the trial, the idea of racial profiling wasn t talked about. profiling was talked about, but not racial profiling. do you think there is an underpinning of race throughout this that wasn t brought into the trial? no, what he was charged with ....

Picture was building up was that george zimmerman was right to look at a young black teenager and think trouble. that is racial profiling. from the moment that incident happened until this very moment, race has been shot through this entire ordeal. what they want us to do is pretend that race doesn t matter and then at the same time smuggle race in. look at trayvon, look at these people that always get away. then my second question. this one from daniel. i m around the same age as trayvon, and would this case be different if it was me that night instead of him? this is a great question. what a question. can i answer? you ve had your chance. if trayvon had been that young man, daniel, would we be even debating this here? might be debating parts of it. i think there probably would have been an arrest much more quickly at that point, but, piers, bottom line, is the whole ....

Definition of profiling. you look at someone and you make an assumption by their appearance as to what you believe they are doing. and that s a tool that s used by law enforcement all the time, but george zimmerman wasn t a member of law enforcement. so i have been sort of surprised that everyone has said this case is all about race. this case may be about the assumptions that george zimmerman made based on crime, but i don t know that it s about racial profiling. danny, do you agree with that? you heard mark o mara essentially saying, in his view, if you look at other police reports, if you look at other cases, in his view george zimmerman had the right to be suspicious. it s really interesting, because if the prosecution had no interest in making it about race, why did judge debra nelson rule they couldn t use the terms racial profiling. if she had not so ruled, her honor, i have to have wondered would prosecution have inserted race into the case to help them? ....
