Expression of disdain for this city. That was oaklands interim police chief voicing apprehension after a large but peaceful protest this evening. We have ordered scores of arrests following protests in oakland, police or the crowd to disperse when a countywide curfew took effect at it a clock tonight. Officers detained 40 people for violating the curfew and the county sheriff is reporting 100 arrests. This was mostly a peaceful night. We spoke with protesters in oakland and walnut creek, they tell us they dont want looting and violence to overshadow their message. They hope that their calls for justice and equality will finally be heard. Shortly after the curfew went into effect police used smoke grenades to disperse the people still in the downtown area. Some people threw rocks at officers.
