Changes to temporary employment conditions saved 27,000 jobs

A pandemic-related measure enabling employers to make temporary changes to workers conditions has saved 27,000 jobs, the Department of Industrial and Employment Relations (DIER) said on Tuesday.
In a statement, the government said there were 567 cases on adequate working conditions investigated during the first four months of the year.
51 cases resulted in financial requests, which amounted to €115,648. 45 inspections took place in workplaces where 99 employees were interviewed. The department also asked the police to open 52 legal proceedings in the criminal court against those who did not pay all amounts due to their employees.
A greater number of cases were resolved amicably without involving the court, the government said in a statement.  ....

A bitterly-fought resolution condemning the state of the rule of law in Malta passed through the European Parliament this morning in a landslide vote – with 635 votes in favour, 46 against and 12 abstentions.
The resolution, which had seen stiff opposition from Labour MEPs, sailed through this morning’s plenary session as had been expected, since it had already garnered the support of all political groups, even the Socialists and Democrats, at Committee stage last week. ....

A draft text of next week’s European Parliament resolution on the rule of law in Malta and the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia casts doubt on the appropriateness of granting presidential pardons for turning state’s evidence on the case.
The text, which has been signed off on by all the European Parliament’s political groups but which is still open to amendments, expresses “concerns about the repeated offer and use of presidential pardons in the context of the murder trial” and stresses that “testimonies offered for other crimes should be very carefully assessed and should not be used to evade full justice for murder”. ....

Over 500 kilograms of waste collected in Earth Day clean-up activities

A total of 505 kilograms of recyclable, mixed, and bulky waste has been collected in a number of clean-ups held on the occasion of Earth Day.
The waste, which includes plastic, polystyrene, wood pellets and cigarette butts, was collected from the areas of Wied Qirda, Delimara, Buskett, Dwejra and Għar Ħasan.
Environment Minister Aaron Farrugia, who took part in the clean-ups, said the “most noble” duty is that of protecting present and future generations and the planet.
The COVID-19 pandemic had brought this and the “very real threat” of climate change and environmental degradation into focus.
“To this end, we are working on various strategies and actions to move towards a zero-carbon economy. Just this week, we launched the first national campaign on climate change, and will be publishing the Low Carbon Development Strategy shortly,” Farrugia said.  ....
