A bitterly-fought resolution condemning the state of the rule of law in Malta passed through the European Parliament this morning in a landslide vote – with 635 votes in favour, 46 against and 12 abstentions.
The resolution, which had seen stiff opposition from Labour MEPs, sailed through this morning’s plenary session as had been expected, since it had already garnered the support of all political groups, even the Socialists and Democrats, at Committee stage last week. ....

A draft text of next week’s European Parliament resolution on the rule of law in Malta and the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia casts doubt on the appropriateness of granting presidential pardons for turning state’s evidence on the case.
The text, which has been signed off on by all the European Parliament’s political groups but which is still open to amendments, expresses “concerns about the repeated offer and use of presidential pardons in the context of the murder trial” and stresses that “testimonies offered for other crimes should be very carefully assessed and should not be used to evade full justice for murder”. ....

The Skinny | No 76 – Rosianne Resigns
3 March 2021, 7:32am
What are we skinning? The resignation of Parliamentary Secretary for Reforms Rosianne Cutajar following allegations that she would have been allocated a sizeable amount of cash while brokering an Mdina property deal for business magnate-turned-murder suspect Yorgen Fenech.
Why are we skinning it? Because resignations are only a recent phenomenon in Maltese political culture, and the involvement of Yorgen Fenech in the whole debacle adds a layer of edgy sleaziness to the whole affair.
But what makes this any more special than all the other political resignations we’ve experienced over the years? To be fair, it IS depressingly distinguished by its similarity to any and all political links to Yorgen Fenech. ....

by Karl Azzopardi
The prostitution law reform as proposed by the Parliamentary Secretary for Reforms Rosianne Cutajar will only serve to protect pimps and men who want to buy sexy, a coalition of experts on prostitution and trafficking have said.
“The Parliamentary Secretary cannot in good conscience pursue a law that will protect the few, enable Malta to become the Mediterranean’s sex-hub, and fail to protect the majority of women trapped in, or are vulnerable to abuse and exploitation,” the Coalition on the Human Trafficking and Prostitution said. ....
