Ohio Senate Adjourns Without Overriding Gov. DeWine's Veto of Controversial Health Order Bill

/
Senate President Larry Obhof (R-Medina) closed this year s session without bringing the potential veto override to a vote.
The Ohio Senate adjourned without overriding Gov. Mike DeWine’s veto of a bill that restricted his ability to issue health orders to shut down businesses.
Senate President Larry Obhof says his members have been working out differences with DeWine, his fellow Republican. And Obhof says another bill (Sub HB609) the Senate passed late last night does include language that health orders must apply equally to all businesses.
“So that you can’t have the situation we had last spring where small businesses get closed but larger ones because they are deemed essential get to stay open, Obhof says. ....

Lawmakers fail to deal with energy bill | News, Sports, Jobs

Dec 24, 2020
CLEVELAND (AP) Ohio lawmakers ended their 2020 legislative session late Tuesday without repealing or replacing a scandal-tainted bill that provides a $1 billion bailout for two aging Ohio nuclear power plants, among other provisions.
The Legislature adjourned for the year after sending Republican Gov. Mike DeWine a number of bills for his signature. But after more than four months of negotiations, it failed to reach a deal to fix House Bill 6, the 2019 legislation under scrutiny since then-Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder and four others were arrested in late July.
Federal authorities say Householder led a $60 million bribery scheme secretly funded by Akron-based FirstEnergy Corp. to win legislative approval for a $150 million annual subsidy for the nuclear plants, which were once operated by a wholly owned FirstEnergy subsidiary. ....

2020 Year In Review - Despite Nuclear Bailout Scandal, Republican Leaders Keep HB6

In the course of seven years, HB6 sends $1 billion in subsidies to nuclear plants, $140 million to solar farms, and hundreds of millions of dollars to coal plants, paid for by new charges on every Ohio electric user’s bills. All while cutting green energy mandates.
The beginning of 2020 had so much on its plate with the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent economic downturn that it seemed like the controversial energy law had been left in the rear view mirror.
Then in July everything changed.
We re here today to announce the arrest of Larry Householder the speaker of the house, said U.S. Attorney David DeVillers announcing that House Speaker Larry Householder (R-Glenford) was under arrested for alleged racketeering. ....

Lawmakers fall short of overriding health orders bill veto
By ANDREW WELSH-HUGGINSDecember 23, 2020 GMT
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Gov. Mike DeWine’s veto of a bill limiting the Health Department’s ability to fight the pandemic will stand after Republican lawmakers wrapped up their two-year session without making good on a veto override threat.
The bill that DeWine vetoed Dec. 3 would have allowed the Ohio Legislature to adopt resolutions to rescind Health Department orders to prevent the spread of contagious diseases. It would also prevent the agency from implementing regional or statewide quarantines for people who haven’t been directly exposed or diagnosed with the disease. ....

Ohio lawmakers do nothing on scandal-tainted House Bill 6

Ohio lawmakers do nothing on scandal-tainted House Bill 6
Caught between lawmakers who wanted to do more to curb the nuclear subsidies and those who wanted to bail out the plants, Ohio s GOP-controlled House couldn t cobble together the votes needed for a change.
“The substance of House Bill 6, not the criminal proceedings, are complex issues on which there’s a wide range of opinion in the legislature,” said House Speaker Bob Cupp, R-Lima. “The diversity of views on what is good and appropriate public policy I think has forestalled a consensus on what should be done.”
On Monday, a Franklin County judge relieved some of the pressure on lawmakers to act by blocking the fees from hitting Ohioans electric bills next month. The fees subsidize two northern Ohio nuclear plants owned by Energy Harbor, formerly known as FirstEnergy Solutions. ....
