Solar canopy planned in Fairhope City Hall parking lot

FAIRHOPE – Part of the Fairhope City Hall parking lot will be covered by a canopy of solar panels in one of the first programs of its kind in the state, utility officials said.
The Alabama Municipal Electric Authority will install a 24-kilowatt solar canopy in the northeast corner of the parking lot on Section Street. The canopy will at least 8 feet above the ground, allowing cars to park under the panels, Arthur Bishop of the AMEA said.
Bishop said the AMEA is installing solar farms in each of its member cities around Alabama. Most solar farms are set up on property away from city buildings. He said Fairhope’s canopy in the City Hall parking lot is different from other systems in the program. ....

Brown resigns from Fairhope City Council

FAIRHOPE – The Fairhope City Council could vote as early as Monday, March 8 on a new council member to complete the term of Robert Brown, who resigned Feb. 22.
Brown announced his resignation at the last City Council meeting. He said he was moving outside the city limits and would not be eligible to serve on the council.
“I believe there is a purpose and time and that things happen for a reason,” Brown said. “We might not understand at the moment why, but if we put our trust in God, he will reveal it to us when it’s time. There is a reason I’ve been given the honor to serve the city of Fairhope for the last four years. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I might change a few things. I’ve had an opportunity present itself that is truly a one-time opportunity and felt me and my family had to take it. I’ve struggled with this decision because it forces me to do something I don’t want to do. I’ll be moving outside the city of Fairhope corpo ....

Fairhope seeking Triangle recreation grant

FAIRHOPE – A 1.5-mile walking and bicycle trail could circle Fairhope’s Triangle property if a $550,000 plan is approved.
The Fairhope City Council voted Monday, Feb. 22, to apply for a grant from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs for the project. Under the grant, ADECA would pay $400,000 for the work with Fairhope paying the rest.
Mayor Sherry Sullivan said city officials and residents have been meeting to plan the best use for the site between US 98 and Veterans Drive.
“We’ve got to put together a timeline on how we will move forward, but this is one step in that process, which is applying for grants for those trails, for a trailhead, for rest rooms, for some signage,” Sullivan said. “And again, this money does become available every year, but we felt like this was timely for us to do this as we continue to work through the development of the Triangle property.” ....
