TSU President Glenda Baskin Glover was among the speakers, as was James Ammons, former president of FAMU and North Carolina Central University, who is now chancellor at Southern University at New Orleans.
“FAMU educated me, but Dr. Humphries prepared me for my life’s work,” said Ammons, who served as provost under Humphries.
FAMU President Larry Robinson, a nuclear chemist by training who was recruited to FAMU more than two decades ago by Humphries, described the occasion as a “celebration of life for this great American, an administrator who was eminently brilliant, a visionary, whose brilliance was on constant display.”

Around 80 people attended a vigil for three beloved members of the Florida A&M University FAMUly Thursday evening at the eternal flame.
Erected at the center of the HBCU s campus to commemorate its recognition as the 1997-1998 College of Year by Time Magazine under former university president Frederick Humphries, the location was appropriate for the vigil held to honor the icon who recently passed away at age 85.
In addition to Humphries, former Student Government Association President and Board of Trustees member Jaylen Smith and longtime FAMU employee Cornelia Henry – who both died recently – were remembered during the vigil.

A series of services will be held next week for Former Florida A&M University President Frederick S. Humphries, who died in Orlando Thursday. He was 85.
A student vigil, hosted by the the FAMU Student Government Association, will take place July 8 at at 8 p.m. at the universities eternal flame.
On Friday July 10, Humphries will lie in state for public viewing from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Lee Hall Auditorium, 1601 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, according to a FAMU press release.
There will be a public wake beginning at 6 p.m. and an hour later the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity will host an omega service.
