Board of Regents discusses enrollment numbers, mental health grant and sabbatical leaves Posted By: Features Editor February 26, 2021 Gage Johnson Spring 2021 Enrollment Don Robertson, vice president of student affairs, said the total headcount for the spring semester showed a decline in enrollment of about 2 percent compared to last year. Robertson said enrollment has increased in graduate students but has decreased in undergraduate. “Some of that is reflective because of what’s happening in the high schools, and our Racer Academy numbers are down a bit,” Robertson said. “Part of that is the success of our students. We graduated more students this past fall than we did in the fall of ‘19, and of course, that’s what we want to do, we want the students to graduate.” ....
cstribling1@murraystate.edu On Tuesday, Feb. 2, President Bob Jackson and a panel of distinguished medical, governmental and historical officials talked to the Murray State community about the latest COVID-19 updates and the vaccine at the first virtual Town & Gown President’s Breakfast of 2021. Panelists included Chief Medical Officer Bob Hughes, CEO of Murray Calloway County Hospital Jerry Penner, Executive Advisor at the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services Mark Carter, Mayor Bob Rogers and history professor James Humphries. In the forum, Carter said as of Monday, Feb. 1, a total of 362,271 people have been vaccinated in Kentucky with 86 percent of the first doses received administered. Carter said they were approaching Gov. Andy Beshear’s goal of having 90 percent of the doses received into arms within seven days. ....
Faculty Senate finishes semester with controversial discussions Posted By: News Editor November 11, 2020 Daniella Tebib dtebib@murraystate.edu During the Faculty Senate’s last meeting of the semester on Tuesday, Nov. 10, members discussed Provost Tim Todd’s change to scheduling, the Confederate monument and the role of the Instructional Assessment System. Role of IAS The Faculty Senate drafted resolution FSR-19-20-7 to discuss the role of IAS in instructional evaluations. “IAS student evaluation instruments will continue to be administered, but will not be the sole basis for evaluating faculty’s teaching excellence,” according to resolution FSR-19-20-7. “Each department will submit to the Office of Academic Affairs and their faculty in writing a teaching evaluation plan that details how IAS teaching evaluations and other evaluative tools will be used in tenure, promotion and annual performance reviews. Beshear gives update on potential budget cut Posted By: News Editor November 11, 2020 Daniella Tebib dtebib@murraystate.edu During a media briefing on Nov. 4, Gov. Andy Beshear said the commonwealth is on track to balance the fiscal year 2021 budget without any cuts. “Today’s news means that critical areas, such as education, health care and public safety will not suffer from midyear cuts but will instead be fully supported at their budgeted amounts,” Beshear said. This announcement came after President Bob Jackson sent an email on Sept. 9 warning faculty of a possible eight percent budget cut, which would have resulted in a $3.5 million cut from the current fiscal year 2020-21. ....

Rapid testing is now available on campus and the required quarantine period for those exposed to the virus has decreased. Director of Communication Shawn Touney said the quarantine policy was changed from a 14-day quarantine period to a seven to 10-day period. “Due to the CDC’s updated quarantine policies, in consultation with our local health department, Dr. Bob Hughes, chief medical officer, state officials and others, we have updated our quarantine period from 14 days to seven-10 days, depending on the type of test administered,” Touney said. ....
