Opinion: Pulling funding for Alberta agri-business group doesn't make sense

On April 20, 2021, the Plant Protein Alliance of Alberta (PPAA) announced that it would be closing its doors due to the termination of financial support by the Government of Alberta. This represents a sad and perplexing turn of events, as PPAA’s work to promote the diversification of Alberta’s agri-food economy is often stated to be of the highest provincial priority.
The closure of PPAA is a loss, not only for Alberta, but also for the prairie region and, indeed, for Canada.

Editor: On April 20, the Plant Protein Alliance of Alberta (PPAA) announced it would be closing its doors due to the termination of financial support by the Government of Alberta. This represents a perplexing and sad turn of events. PPAA’s work to promote the diversification of Alberta’s agri-food economy represents a subject that is commonly recognized by government officials to be of a high level of priority.
In its capacity as a member-based industry association, PPAA has been incredibly productive in building a network of members and tirelessly promoting the economic benefits of value-added processing in the agri-food sector, with an emphasis on the growing importance of plant proteins in food. PPAA actively supported its membership base, developed a quality newsletter, and held numerous high-level seminars, webinar ....
